For many golfers, long irons and hybrids can be some of the most intimidating clubs in the bag. Whether you’re hitting a long approach shot, a par-3 tee shot, or trying to reach a par-5 in two, these clubs often determine how well you score.
The biggest mistake I see golfers make is trying to hit the ball too hard. The harder you swing creates a faster your tempo, which makes it more difficult to make solid contact. Long irons and hybrids are designed to produce distance…you don’t have to force it.
The Two Keys to Better Contact
1. Slow Down Your Tempo
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to make a slow, smooth, balanced swing.
A smooth tempo allows the club to stay on plane, improves your balance, and helps you strike the ball in the center of the clubface. Remember, a solid shot with an 80% swing will almost always travel farther than an off-center hit made at 100%.
As the legendary Ernie Els has often demonstrated throughout his career, an effortless-looking swing can produce tremendous power. His nickname, “The Big Easy,” is a reminder that great tempo, not brute force, is one of the keys to consistent ball striking.

2. Play the Ball in the Correct Position
Proper ball position is just as important as your swing.
- Long Irons (3–5 Iron): Position the ball one ball forward of center, allowing you to strike the ball first and then the turf.
- Hybrids: Play the ball slightly farther forward than a long iron, about one to two ball widths inside your lead heel. I still promote hitting down on the ball, hitting the ball first, then the turf.
Trust the loft of the club to do its job. Your goal is to make a descending strike with both a long iron and a hybrid.
Practice Tip
The next time you’re on the practice range, hit five shots with a smooth, controlled swing at about 80% effort, like swinging in slow-motion. Also, softening your grip will help relax your muscles creating an effortless, consistent swing.
Most golfers are surprised to discover that their smoother swings not only produce better contact, but often travel straighter and just as far, or even farther.
Final Thought
Great golf isn’t about swinging harder, it’s about swinging smarter.
Develop a smooth tempo, play the ball in the correct position, and trust your swing. When you do, your long irons and hybrids will become clubs you can rely on instead of clubs you fear.
Remember: Smooth swings create solid contact, and solid contact creates better golf.
